Restaurant Awards

On Tuesday, 30 May 2023 South African culinary greats were honoured at the 5 th annual Luxe Restaurant Awards. The prestigious awards, which honour the finest contributions to the South African restaurant industry, were announced to an intimate audience of 100 leading industry figures at the trendy Ethos Rosebank, Johannesburg.

The 2023 LUXE Restaurant Awards

The 2023 LUXE Restaurant Awards were held on Tuesday, 30 May at Ethos in Johannesburg, bringing together South Africa’s leading chefs, restaurateurs, and culinary creatives.

The ceremony was hosted by acclaimed chef and television personality Tumi Mogoai. Attendees included Ryan Cole, Lorna Maseko, Johannes Richter, David Higgs, Mogau Seshoene, and Zanele van Zyl.

Winners were selected by an independent panel of anonymous food critics, alongside a national public voting process. The judging panel was led by Chad Fourie, Chief Judge of the LUXE Restaurant Awards.

Fourie commented:
“For nine months, our judges have explored South Africa’s most exceptional dining destinations. Tonight, we celebrate the brilliance, discipline, and creativity that define our culinary leaders.”

Twenty-five awards were presented across a broad range of categories. Johannes Richter was named Chef of the Year, while Salsify at the Roundhouse received Restaurant of the Year.

The 2023 LUXE Restaurant Awards category winners are as follows:

5. Bar of the Year: Zioux

6. Culinary Innovation Award: Wandile Mabaso

7. Culinary Media Personality of the Year: Lorna Maseko

8. Culinary Rising Star Award: Jess Van Dyk

9. Food/Lifestyle Series of the Year: Homegrown Tastes South Africa

10. Pastry Chef of the Year: Meg Meikle

11. Pioneer Award: David Higgs

12. Service Excellence Award: SIBA – The Restaurant

13. Sustainability Award: The Livingroom at Summerhill

14. African Restaurant of the Year: Clara’s Bar

15. Bistro of the Year: Embarc

16. Café of the Year: Just Teddy

17. Fine Dining Restaurant of the Year: La Petite Colombe

18. Grillhouse of the Year: Marble

19. Hotel Restaurant of the Year: SIBA – The Restaurant

20. International Restaurant of the Year: TANG CAPE TOWN

21. Lifestyle Restaurant of the Year: Artistry

22. Pop Up Experience of the Year: Vusi Ndlovu – Edge at the Mount Nelson

23. Street Food Experience of the Year: Ramenhead

24. Wine Service Award: Victor Okolo

25. People’s Choice Award: Homespan Blouberg
